Optimization of hydropower retrofitting and PV plant integration Techno-economic analysis is a reliable way to design a hybrid power system that allows decision makers to select appropriate capacity options based on different technical and economic indicators .
Retrofitting adjacent hydropower plants with pumping stations to construct hybrid pumped storage hydropower (HPSH) plants is an important attempt to promote hydropower flexibility and renewable energy consumption. However, the operation mode and optimal configuration for HPSH and photovoltaic (PV) power plants remain unclear.
Compared with conventional pumped storage power plants, HPSH plants are built on existing conventional hydropower plants and less constrained by topography, water sources, urban planning, or environmental protection issues.
The curtailment rate is introduced into the techno-economic index. The LCOE of the hybrid system can be as low as 0.091 $/kWh when 5 % LPSP can be acceptable. Feasibility of the large-scale cascade hydropower energy storage system is evaluated. Pumping station efficiency is critical to the economic feasibility.
The 300 MW Xianfeng PV plant and the 150 MW Qianxi PV plant were integrated into the Hongjiadu hydropower plant to transform it into a million-kW-level hydro-PV hybrid power plant in 2020. The lower Dongfeng and Suofengying reservoirs have seasonal and daily regulation capacities, respectively.
The hydropower capacity is 1895 MW, of which Hongjiadu Reservoir provides reliable multiyear regulation capability. The 300 MW Xianfeng PV plant and the 150 MW Qianxi PV plant were integrated into the Hongjiadu hydropower plant to transform it into a million-kW-level hydro-PV hybrid power plant in 2020.
