ZHAI HUIYONG/FOR CHINA DAILY China's lithium batteries are gaining increasing favor amongoverseas buyers with advancing technologies and improving services, as well as surging demand for electric vehicles worldwide, experts said.
Lithium technologies are expected to advance quickly over the next few years. However, companies in China and beyond are frantically pursuing alternative batteries not centred around lithium, in part because the minerals needed to make the current options come from just a few countries.
Moody's analysts also said that China's competitive advantage in lithium-ion battery cell production gives its carmakers an edge in terms of EV production costs. "China is expected to account for more than half of the global supply of lithium, with that advantage (in addition to) lower labor costs," they said.
Currently in China, in addition to well-known battery giants like Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd and BYD, peers such as CALB, Gotion High-tech Co, Sunwoda and Eve Energy are also among the world's top 10 EV battery makers. All of these battery giants have announced plans to expand foreign business.
According to a report by Chuancai Securities, from 2017 to 2020, China's lithium battery exports increased steadily at a rate of20-35 percent per year. In 2021 and 2022, they experienced explosive growth of 66.5 percent and 86.7 percent, respectively.
According to data released by South Korean battery market research firm SNE Research, in 2022, Chinese enterprises accounted for60.4 percent of the market share of the top 10 global battery companies in terms of capacity. Chinese battery manufacturers are also ramping up production with a focus on technological advancement.
